Armorial and allegorical woodcut of Manuzio's Roman device incorporating a small dolphin-and-anchor on title, woodcut initials. (Lacking 2I1-2I6 containing index at end, title washed and remargined at bottom with repair touching two letters within imprint, washing and tiny marginal repair to second leaf.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine, turn-ins and edges (joints split and repaired, edges rubbed). Provenance: Bartolomeo Antonio (ownership inscription on title dated 1754).

FIRST EDITION of the Roman Catholic Catechism as authorized by the Council of Trent. Paulo Manuzio's press was brought to Rome under papal auspices in 1561, where it did some of its finest typographical work, leaving his son, Aldo the younger (b. 1547), involved with the Venetian operations.
