HORATIUS FLACCUS, Quintus (65-8 BC). Opera. Edited by Charles Combe who signs the dedication. London: William Brown and John Warren for T. Payne and J. Edwards, 1792-1793. 2 volumes, royal 4° (340 x 272mm). Engraved portrait by J. Jones after W. Grimaldi. (Portrait spotted at margins, intermittent light spotting to text.) Contemporary red morocco with elaborate gilt ruling and lettering, turn-ins with gilt metope border, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, vol. I with front cover detached and spine chipped at head).
ONE OF 25 LARGE PAPER COPIES, sometimes bound in four rather than two volumes. ESTC records 8 large paper copies in insitutional libraries, of which 3 are in the BL. These were expensive, William Beckford purchasing a copy bound by Roger Payne for £22 10s. Brunet calls this a 'belle édition' with notes from the better commentators, but not always chosen with 'assez de goût'. Brunet III, 322; Lowndes III, 1114.
