Venice: Aldine Press, 1516. 2° (306 x 211mm). Woodcut device on title. (Lacks the final leaf with device, single wormhole increasing to 2 throughout slightly affecting text, worming in the fore-margins as far as B1, title reinforced at the inner margin, light waterstaining in the fore-margins at the beginning.) Contemporary North Italian brown goatskin, sides with gilt and blind fillets and central semi-circular patterns, small fleuron at corners, 'Iamblichus’ in gilt with a small ornament, gilt edges (rebacked, corners crudely repaired, head and foot of spine worn, lacks ties). Provenance: Sir Henry Marten (1872-1948; historian, provost of Eton) -- Robert Birley (1903-1982, headmaster of Eton; ownership inscription recording the provenance).
A COPY WITH INTERESTING ETON PROVENANCE: Henry Marten 'was the leading figure in a development which had a profound effect on the education provided in the public schools and grammar schools of the country', while Birley was 'the most influential public school headmaster of his generation' (ODNB). The second Aldine edition of this important collection of classical, platonic and neoplatonic works.
