PLUTARCH (c.45-c.120). Les oeuvres morales et philosophiques. Paris: Frederic Morel, 1581. 2° (385 x 250mm). Morel device on title, large woodcut historiated initials, ruled in red throughout. (Title and preliminaries a little thumb-soiled, occasional tears and stains at margins.) Contemporary calf, sides with central gilt arabesque enclosed by fillets with decorative cornerpieces, gilt ornaments in spine panels (lacks ties, head and foot of spine and edges worn, some scuffing). Provenance: inscription, dated 31 December 1613, recording the purchase of the book for £1 10s. -- John Evelyn 1620-1706; his sale, Christie's, 16 March 1978, lot 1197).
