Hering, with his ticket, gilt-panelled sides with massed pointillé and scroll-work tooling at inner corners, spines directly lettered and with repeated pointilllé work, contrasting citron and brown morocco liners, the former with wide gilt dentelle and pointillé border, gilt edges (a little rubbing and chipping, mainly to joints). Provenance: John Dent (c.1761-1826, politician; note of purchase at his sale, 29 March 1827; excised catalogue description stating 'It is believed that this is the first copy which has ever occurred in any public sale in England'; the sale for £43 1sh. noted by Brunet) -- Sir John Hayford Thorold, Syston Park (1773-1831; bookplates; sold 1884 or later).

THE DENT-THOROLD COPY. ONE OF SIX LARGE-PAPER COPIES, SPLENDIDLY BOUND IN BLUE MOROCCO BY HERING. Described as one of only six on large paper in Aedes Althorp. I, p. 135 and in Renouard's private catalogue. Brunet V, 448: 'édition belle, correcte et fort estimée, laquelle présente un bon texte ayant pour base celui de l'édit. aldine'.
