Early 17th-century Parisian brown morocco, flat spine with 4 connecting borders à la Du Seuil, same pattern on sides, gilt edges (some scuff marks, spine a little rubbed, head of spine a little worn). Provenance: Fran. Panton (17th-century signature on title) – Kidd (18th-century signature on title) – T. Clifford Allbutt, Leeds (1836-1925, physician; title signature and bookplate).
An important edition of Virgil and the first work to contain Robert Estienne’s three sizes of his new roman type, possibly cut for him by Claude Garamond. 'For this handsome edition of Virgil Robert Estienne produced the first critical text of the important commentary of Servius’(Schreiber). The second work was by the eminent Roman humanist to whom we are grateful for his history of the Sack of Rome. These 2 works are frequently found together.
