Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, a prince seats smokes a huqqa whilst watching ladies playing with fireworks, the scene set at night on a terrace between two pavilions, a lake in the background, laid down between cream borders with gold floral arabesques, the reverse with inscription in black devanagari, in old velvet covered frame

Lot Essay

A closely related painting of Zib al-Nisa Begum watching fireworks in the collection of the Islamic Art Museum in Berlin, is attributed by Malini Roy to Lucknow or Faizabad, circa 1754-75, (India's Fabled City. The Art of Courtly Lucknow, exhibition catalogue, Los Angeles and Paris, 2011, fig. 22, p. 172). This painting and lot 116 have similar inscriptions on the reverse and identical gilt margins which indicate that they come from the same album.
