Lot Essay

This portrait of Maharaja Ram Singh II is based on an original photograph, an attributed self-portrait dated circa 1875-76. Another painted portrait by a Jaipur artist, very similar to the present work is published in Rosie Llewellyn-Jones (ed.), Portraits in Princely India 1700-1947, Marg, 2008, fig. 1 and fig. 7, p.103 and p.111.
