Lot Essay

US$15,000-30,000

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with black ribbed dial and applied steel numerals in 1977 and its subsequent sale on 19 February 1979. Furthermore delivered with Patek Philippe sales tag and fitted presentation box.

To the best of our knowledge, this watch has never been offered at auction thus far.

Reference 3700, the "Jumbo" Nautilus was produced from 1976 until around 1998. At the time it was launched, the Nautilus was advertised as the most expensive steel watch on the market. The watch was designed by Gerald Genta, as a competitor to Genta's already successful Audemars Piguet Royal Oak model. The watch was advertised as being "possibly the most exclusive steel watch you can own".

Examples of the reference 3700-1 are illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by M. Huber & A. Banbery, 1998, pages 230 & 231
