QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
The deep body is raised on three silver-inlaid blade-form supports and is cast with two registers of taotie masks on a leiwen ground and seperated by narrow notched flanges. One mask is centred on a C-shaped handle surmounted by a bovine head below a pair of posts with whorl-cast caps rising from the rim. One side of the lower body inlaid with two characters maker's mark, Shishou.

Lot Essay

Shisou is believed to have been a monk who worked in the late Ming period (c. 1620-1644), but as there is no specific information on him, it is also possible that it is the name of a bronze studio or school.
