The square ink cake is carved to one side with an architectural complex picked out in gold pigment. The other side is incised and gilt with the

with the inscription 'Wang Shizhen of Yanshan', the opposite side with 'Spring day of the Bingshen year of the Wanli reign'.

Lot Essay

Wang Shizhen (1526-1590) was a late Ming scholar-official from the Jiajing to Wanli period, renowned for his accomplishments in poetry and literature. The inscriptions on the current ink cake are likely to be after the calligraphic style of Wang Shizhen.
