Lot Essay

The marquetry scene is copied from two c.1785 roll-top desks by David Roentgen, one in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, the other in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin. Frédéric-Louis Durand, son of the eminent cabinetmaker Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand, collaborated with his father from 1890 and ultimately succeeded him in 1920.
