Lot Essay

The present commode relates closely to the oeuvre of the ebeniste Claude-Charles Saunier, maître in 1752. A related commode in bois citronnier stamped Saunier was sold from the collections of Christopher Gibbs, 'The Manor House at Clifton Hampden', Oxford, Christie's House sale, 25-26 September 2000, lot 214 (£60,950 with premium), whilst a further related example was sold more recently at Christie's, London, 17 March 2011, lot 76.
