Lot Essay

This console is characteristic of Weisweiler's oeuvre. From a stylistic perspective, we find the pierced interlaced stretchers based on the ''cercle geometrique'' figure very characteristic of the innovative patterns designed by the celebrated ébéniste.

A more technical analysis reveals that, like many pieces by Weisweiler this console table comes apart in its entirety (as illustrated here). Furthermore, the evidence of 'picots' having originally secured various elements, the quality of the construction and veneers chosen, all support the attribution to the celebrated ébéniste.

Weisweiler completed a number of versions of this model, occasionally embellishing the upper paneled frieze with Wedgewood, lacquer or pietra dura plaques.
