Lot Essay

David David-Weill was one of the most important financiers and philanthropists of the 20th century. As a partner in the Banque Lazard Frères, founded by his father Alexandre Weill and uncles, David-Weill and his wife became one of the premiere patrons of the arts in France. President of the French Council of National Museums, Vice-President of the Friends of the Musée du Louvre and holder of numerous influential posts, David-Weill is perhaps best remembered for the significant donations of works he made from his personal collection to museums such as the Louvre, the Musée Guimet and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
