The present commode was most probably executed by the ébéniste François Mondon (1694-1770) maître circa 1730.
Mondon stamped his works with the abbreviated stamp 'F.M.D', and 'Mondon' towards the end of his career. Although the stamp 'F.M' found on this commode is not specifically recorded, the present lot was most certainly executed by the ébéniste. This is further supported by a very closely related commode stamped 'Mondon', of virtually identical outline and featuring the same distinctive mounts with confronting female busts, sold Christie's, London, 11 September 2008, lot 150.
Mondon is recorded to have collaborated and supplied furniture to the celebrated marchand-ébéniste Pierre II Migeon (maître circa 1725) and it is interesting to note that a closely related commode by Migeon featuring the same distinctive confronting female mounts centring the drawers, is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIè siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 618, fig.a.
