Lot Essay

Wayside Cross represents the cross (Le Calvaire) outside Dieppe at Neuville.

Sickert knew the Peto family well, and Rosemary Peto owned a large collection of paintings by Sickert such as Girl with a Goat (25 x 19 in.), Rue Aguado, Dieppe (15 x 18 in.), The Yellow Sleeve (14 x 17 in.), St Jacques, Dieppe (25 x 20 in.), View of a Street, Dieppe (7 x 5 in.) and a watercolour St. Jacques, Dieppe (11 x 9 in.).

We are very grateful to Dr Wendy Baron for her assistance in preparing the catalogue entries for lots 130 and 131.
