This extraordinary porcelain model is adapted from the series originally created in the early 1730's for Augustus the Strong's Japanese Palace in Dresden. See S. Wittwer, Die Galerie der Meissener Tiere, Düsseldorf, Band I, 2004, p. 183-184 and p. 325. This model was originally conceived and executed by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1732. The model was adapted and reintroduced by Erich Oehme in April 1921.

Underway by 1725, this Porzellanschloss, was entirely constructed around and devoted to housing his porcelain collections. The Great Gallery, which was to be the first room in the enfilade entered on the first floor, was to contain a porcelain menagerie of both native and exotic specimens and even some mythical beasts. Produced by Meissen in the early 20th century, the present example is a celebration of this grand tradition.

Also see Dr. K. Berling, ed., Meissen China: An Illustrated History, New York, 1972, p. 14, fig. 4; and Christie's, New York, 25 October 2005, lot 57 for a similar example.
