PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LILI AND RICHARD D. ZANUCK (Lots 64-75) Richard D. Zanuck (1934-2012) was born in Los Angeles, and was one of the most influential Hollywood film producers of the 20th Century. His father, Darryl F. Zanuck, founded 20th Century Fox in the 1930s, and Richard’s first job, as a boy, was delivering the Saturday Evening Post to the company. At 28, Richard Zanuck was named president in charge of production of 20th Century Fox and became the then-youngest corporate head in the Hollywood annals. During his eight years at the helm, the studio recaptured the lustre of its heyday and received an unprecedented 159 Oscar nominations. Three of the films, The Sound of Music, Patton and The French Connection, went on to win Best Picture of the Year Oscars. Other successes include the Planet of the Apes series, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and M*A*S*H. With the formation of the Zanuck/Brown Co. in 1971, Zanuck was responsible for such critical and box office hits as Jaws, a triple-Oscar winner and Best Picture nominee; Jaws II; The Sugarland Express, the Best Screenplay winner at the Cannes Film Festival and Steven Spielberg’s first feature directorial effort; The Sting, winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture; and The Verdict, nominated for five Academy Awards. Zanuck most recently produced the worldwide blockbuster, Alice in Wonderland, which marked Zanuck’s 5th collaboration with Tim Burton. To date the film has grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, making it only the 6th film ever to do so. He was happily married to Lili for 34 years, and together they produced the double Oscar winner Cocoon, and Driving Miss Daisy, the latter of which saw them winning the Oscar for Best Picture. As avid collectors, with a superb view for design (Lili oversaw the construction of their house in Beverly Hills), the present works reflect their passion and appreciation of quality.
