Despite the fact that there were numerous cultural and political ties between Spain and Italy, Spanish sculptors, particularly in the north, maintained a style which was highly distinctive. The present relief may be compared with numerous other carved wooden panels, many of which originally formed part of complex altarpieces. The elaborate estofado decoration, the slightly theatrical poses of the apostles, and the raked positioning of the table, are particularly reminiscent of another wooden relief of the Last Supper in the church of S. Sepolcro, Saragossa (Weise, op. cit., II, pl 285).
