D'après Vivianne Baeke (White Gold, Black Hands, Ivory Sculpture in Congo, Vol.2, 2011), ce type d'ikhoko s'inspirerait d'un masque très ancien appelé gambuya ga malela qui se portait en cimier, à l'horizontal. Celui-ci se distingue par un prolongement mentonnier, par une ornementation gravée en cercle et par une très grande ancienneté.
