Lot Essay

Epstein, célèbre artiste de la première moitié du siècle dernier, commença à s'intéresser à l'art africain dès 1902 lors d'une visite au Musée du Trocadéro.
Ces deux trompes sont sculptées dans de larges défenses d'éléphant. Elles constituent l'un des emblèmes du chef ou du roi. Ces objets étaient utilisés plus comme des symboles de pouvoir plutôt que comme des instruments de musique. Ces oliphants ne sont joués qu'occasionnellement.
Le plus grand oliphant présente une embouchure et une extrémité en bouton, orné de trois symboles royaux rectangulaires gravés.
