The Satilla was constructed by the Fore River Ship and Engine Company, of Quincy, Massachusetts, which was founded by Alexander Graham Bell's famous assistant Thomas A. Watson. The shipyard began operation in 1886 and continued building ships until 1986 constructing many vessels for the US Navy used during the First and Second World Wars. The Satilla, built in 1906, was a 2,667 ton cargo ship and was sunk by a torpedo in 1917 and lost at sea.
