The vendor attended the Beatles concert in Hull and following the show, he struck up a conversation with one of the band’s technicians [probably Mal Evans]. The vendor was keen to start his own band so the technician with whom he was speaking gave him the microphone in this lot, telling him that John Lennon thought it wasn’t working properly any more so the band had no use for it.
Reslo microphones such as this example were used predominantly at the Cavern Club in the early 1960s and there are many photographs of the Beatles on stage at the Cavern using an identical microphone to this. Similarly, the Beatles can be seen using identical Reslo microphones on various other occasions including: as the Quarrymen at the New Clubmoor Hall, Liverpool on 23 November, 1957; at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London on 2 December, 1963; and at the Wimbledon Palais, London on 14 December, 1963. It appears that the Reslo was the band’s preferred microphone for live appearances in the early days although in the studio, they used Neumann U47 microphones exclusively for recording purposes. Later photographs of the Beatles on stage show them using Neumann or AKG microphones.
