Lot Essay

The squared tripod supports with Greek key ornament to the feet are related to the supports of a torchère designed by Robert Adam for the Drawing-room at Osterley Park, Middlesex (J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, Renaissance to Art Nouveau, London, 1991, p. 101, fig. 319). They are also related to a pair of torchères possibly from the collection of William Randolph Hearst (sold Sotheby's New York, 9 June 1990, lot 199).
