Lot Essay
This type of foot is typically associated with the Golden Square, Soho, partnership of the furniture and cabinet-makers John Mayhew and William Ince. The handles of this chest, however, are more often seen on furniture by the London and Lancaster makers Gillow & Sons. Gillows published designs for chests of similar elliptical form with a bank of drawers flanked by cupboards in the 1788 Estimate Sketch Book (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Design 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 121). A very similar commode, probably from the same workshop, can be seen in M. Harris & Sons 1868-1968, centenary catalogue, p. 5.
