Lot Essay

Claude Picasso has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

The subject of this touching portrait has been confirmed by Claude Picasso as Catherine Hutin. When Jacqueline Roque met Picasso at Madoura in the early 1950s, she had a daughter, Catherine, by her previous marriage to André Hutin. Whilst Picasso painted Jacqueline on hundreds of occasions, portraits of Catherine such as this are rare in Picasso’s oeuvre.
