Backer executed a number of figure studies in black and white chalk on blue paper, similar in style to those by his associate Govert Flinck (1615-1660). The present drawing, which can probably be dated to around 1643, shows a model who appears wearing the same costume in at least two other figure studies by Backer: the Woman with her hand resting on a jug in the British Museum (Sumowski, op. cit., no. 29x) and the Standing woman in a private American collection (Sumowski, op. cit., no. 26x).
