Lot Essay

This composition relates to a cycle of the months painted by Leandro. Pictures belonging to a similar cycle were formerly in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria and are now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Die Gemäldegalerie des kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien, Vienna, 1991, pl. 92). The 'EQVES' in the signature refers to the knighthood conferred on the artist by the Doge Marino Grimani (1532-1605) in 1595.
