This picture relates to Joachim Wtewael Perseus and Andromeda of 1611, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. There are a number of differences between the present work and the Paris picture, most notably in the treatment of the heads of Perseus, Andromeda and the dragon. Although catalogued as ‘perhaps by his [Joachim’s] son, Peter’, in her 1986 monograph on Joachim Wtewael (loc. cit.), Ann Lowenthal, has not been able to endorse this view on the basis of a photograph.
