The sitter was the daughter and sole heir of Sir Thomas Smith, Master of Requests. She married first Thomas Carey (1612-1649), second son of Robert, 1st Earl of Monmouth, and secondly, in September 1639, Sir Edward Herbert (d. 1658), who served as Attorney-General under King Charles I. The prime version of the present picture is at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.
