8° (183 x 120mm). Title with woodcut device and border, 200 woodcut devices, full woodcut border to each page except 3-leaf table. (Tiny marginal repairs to a few leaves, without final blank.) Brown morocco gilt by Alfred Matthews, gilt edges. Provenance: [H. Yates Thompson].

YATES THOMPSON COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN SPANISH, THE FIRST EMBLEM BOOK WITH SPANISH TEXT. It is divided into two books, the first following the general lines of the Wechel editions 1540-1542, and the second book the Aldine edition of 1546. 'Excluding the two emblems by Daza himself, the Spanish version gives 210 emblems from Alciati, and 200 devices; it is therefore the fullest edition that had appeared,' comments Green. 'The Latin text and mottoes are not given, but only their translation into Spanish. Many of the devices ... are from the same blocks as those in the Latin text of Roville in 1548.' The bibliographer also notes that 'copies of this Spanish version have been accounted rare, because there was no copy in the Whiteknights Catalogue, 1819'. One of Green's two collation copies. Brunet I, 149; Green 36; Landwehr Romanic, 40; Palau 6061.
