ALCIATUS, Andreas (1492-1550). Diverse imprese accomodate a diverse moralità ... Tratte da gli emblemi. Italian version by Giovanni Marquale. Lyons: Macé Bonhomme for Guillaume Rouillé, 1549.
8° (188 x 120mm). Woodcut title border, 136 woodcut devices including 11 trees, every page but one with an ornamental or grotesque border. (Small hole to woodcut on D1, some light soiling.) 16th-century boards with decorations in the style of Grolier preserved in a modern binding (some rubbing to joints and extremities). Provenance: A.H. Bright (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN AND THE FIRST EMBLEM BOOK WITH ITALIAN TEXT. There is no Latin text, but mottoes and stanzas all in Italian. Considering that the first sketch of the book was probably written in Milan in 1522, Marquale's translation appeared at a comparatively late stage in the Alciatus publishing boom. Brunet I, 149; Green 41; Landwehr Romanic, 46.
