4° (218 x 151mm). Engraved title, portrait and 60 emblems, all by Johann Theodor de Bry. (2B4 with closed long but clean tear across leaf, light spotting.) Brown panelled morocco gilt by Classens with gilt oval central design, gilt spine in five compartments, gilt turn-ins and edges (light scuff marks on front cover). Provenance: [H. Yates Thompson] -- S. A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of 'a rare and unusual emblem book' (Salloch), the emblems differing from others by their dramatic content. Each one tells a story, the scenic and architectural background being sometimes German, and often Italian.
