Purple morocco in Jansenist style by Lortic fils, gilt spine-lettering and inner dentelles, gilt edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (1894 bookplate).
FIRST LATIN EDITION, following the Lyons 1571 edition in French. This was the first religious emblem book to make use of love emblems (see Praz p. 44), and the first protestant emblem book. The dedicatee is Jeanne D'Albret, Queen of Navarre, seen in the first emblem in the act of building a temple, with the motto 'Sapiens mulier aedificat domus'.
