PITTONI, Battista (1520-1583) & Lodovico DOLCE (1508-1569). Imprese di diverse prencipi, duchy, signori, ed’altri personaggi et huomini letterati et iillustri. Venice: [s.n.] 1568. [Bound with:] -- Imprese di diversi principi, duchy, signori, ed’altri personaggi, et huomini illustri. Libro secondi. Venice: [s.n.] 1566.
2 works in one volume, 4° (250 x 201mm). Each work with engraved title within richly figurative border, dedication and 48 engraved leaves, all with an emblematic illustration by Pittoni and stanza by Dolce beneath. (Upper inner corner waterstained throughout including title, 4 plates in first work with brown stain, some mainly marginal soiling, light spotting.) Later half vellum, old lettering-piece on spine (new endpapers, corners a little bumped). Provenance: Girolamo Brunetti (manuscript inscription at bottom of both titles, the lower margin of both titles pasted over with a strip of paper to hide inscription, touching part of border in vol.I) – A. H. Bright (bookplate).
Third and second collection of emblematic illustrations by the painter Pittoni, bound in one volume. The plates from both works have been mixed up, probably when the work was rebound. The first volume contains plates numbered 1-10 from the 1568 edition, followed by plates numbered 41-45, 35-36, 48-51 from the 1566 edition, and plates 41-48, 31-40, 11-20 from the 1568 edition. The second work contains plates numbered 1-10 from the 1566 edition, followed by plates 12, 22-30 from the 1568 edition and 21-40 and 11-20 from the 1566 edition. This means the work contains two copies of plates 35 and 36 of the 1566 edition but lacks plates 46 & 47 from the same edition. The 1568 edition contains two copies of plate 12 but lacks plate 21. Landwehr Romanic 606 & 605; cf. Praz pp.457-8.
