RICCIO, Giuseppe. Piscatio philosophica, Venice: 1662.

8° (130 x 90mm). Engraved throughout, 22 leaves (of 24) comprising the title and the full set of 20 fishing scenes, but without the coat-of-arms leaf or the concluding leaf in Greek. (Some marginal soiling.) Full fawn morocco by Douglas Cockerell with his monogram dated 1902, the sides with an all-over gilt foliate design with green morocco onlays and poppies in red morocco onlays, the sides with a central green onlay lettered in gilt, blue roan box. Provenance: cancelled inscription on binder's blank -- Henry Huth (1815-1878; by repute).

FIRST EDITION, FINELY BOUND BY DOUGLAS COCKERELL. A rare emblem book apparently printed for private circulation. Piscatio philosophica is unique in expressing Aristotelian ideas through icons of fishing. It is dedicated to Georgio Cornelio, Bishop of Padua, on the title; while the colophon leaf refers to the advice given by Joanne Baptista de Fabris. Landwehr Romanic, 620 ('rarissime'); Praz p. 138 ('Rare'); Petit 1818.
