WITHER, George (1588-1667). A Collection of Emblemes, ancient and moderne. London: A[ugustine] M[athewes] for John Grismond, 1635 [part-titles dated 1634].
2° (292 x 178mm). Title with woodcut printer's device. Engraved additional title by William Marshall, with ‘A Preposition to the Frontispiece’ bound opposite, engraved portrait of the author by John Payne and 200 circular emblematic engravings by Crispijn de Passe, final page depicting 2 dials in woodcut. Woodcut tailpieces and initial. (Lacks pointers of both dials, inner upper corner of the ‘Preposition’ repaired, small marginal paper repair in margin from Ii4 to end of text, lightly browned and soiled throughout.) Old-style crimson morocco gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (corners lightly rubbed). Provenance: G.H. Powell (manuscript card addressed to Thompson Yates-Bright, loosely inserted) -- S. A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).
One of five imprint variants of this edition. The emblems are printed from plates originally engraved by Crispijn de Passe the elder for Gabriel Rollenhagen's Nucleus emblematorum of 1611-1613. Lowndes 2966; Praz p. 538; STC 25900a.
