Woodcut title vignette, title verso with portrait of dedicatee James VI of Scotland, 37 woodcut portraits within frames of varying design, and with over fifty frames left open for portraits not available for this edition, 44 numbered woodcut emblems at end, each followed by verse in italic. (Marginal repair in C1.) 19th-century Russia by Bedford with his stamp, sides with gilt rule border, spine lettered in gilt and gilt in compartments, gilt edges (spine and top edges evenly faded). FIRST EDITION of this illustrated biographical dictionary of humanists and leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Included are Martin Luther, John Calvin, Peter Zwingli, Conrad Gesner, Marter Bucer, Petrus Martyr, Thomas Crammer, John Knox, Robert Estienne, Hieronymus Froben and Phillip Melanchthon. Bèze was professor of Greek in Lausanne, and both assistant to and successor of Calvin in Geneva. Many of the subjects were personally known to Bèza and therefore his portraits, both written and pictorial, have great authenticity. The work's second part contains forty-four illustrated emblems.
