4° (253 x 186mm). Engraved historiated title border, 13 full-page engraved portraits by Phillipe after Théodore Galle, woodcut opening initial and groteque tail-piece. Contemporary flexible vellum (a little soiled and crinkled, one or two minor tears, inner hniges split, hole in rear pastedown). Provenance: John Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683; 'Bibliotheca Colbertina' inscription on title, shelf mark) -- 'Opus rarum et pretiousm. Bauer' (unsigned bibliographical note) - R.F. Dinley (19th-century signature on pastedown) -- A.H. Bright (bookplate dated 1912) -- George Dunn (book label).
FIRST EDITION of what is probably the rarest of several books of 'Effigies' engraved and published by Phillipe Galle. The subjects include two English cardinals, John Fisher and Reginald Pole; also the poet and grammarian, Pietro Bembo; and another great contributor to the revival of learning, Cardinal Bessarion, whose birthplace was Trebizond. No sale recorded in AE or on-line ABPC. Not in Brunet or Graesse.
