12 parts in 4 volumes, 4° (195 x 138mm). Woodcuts in the text, Plantin's device to titles. (Occasional very light scattered spotting and browning, some gathering in part VI slightly more heavily affected, a few minor marginal chips due to paper flaws.) 19th century red morocco by Chambolle-Duru dated 1869, gilt spines, blue morocco doublures with wide gilt dentelles, marbled-paper flyleaves, marbled and gilt edges. Provenance: Bibliothèque de Mello (gilt arms to covers).
RARE COMPLETE PLANTIN EDITION of one of the classic knight-errantry tales. The library at Château de Mello had its foundations back in the ninth century, and was bought in 1819 by François-Alexandre Seillière, later Baron de Mello, French industrialist, art and book collector. His son, Achille (1813-1887) greatly augmented the collections which in turn were inherited by his sons Nicolas (d. 1887) and François-Florentin-Achille (d. 1890). The library was dispersed by in London by Sotheby's on 28 February 1887. According to ABPC/AE-online, NO COMPLETE COPY HAS SOLD AT AUCTION SINCE 1975. Brunet I, 216.
