Printer's unicorn device (Renouard 499), 17 large and 29 small metalcut illustrations, metalcut historiated and decorative borders on every page, including a Creation series, a Biblia Pauperum series, orders of the Church, Last Judgement, grotesques, etc., all but 2 of the large cuts ILLUMINATED AND COLOURED by a contemporary hand, initials, paragraph marks and line fillers in gold on alternating red and blue grounds. (16 large illustrations cut to type-page edge and window-mounted in later vellum frame, minor rubbing, occasional small stain.) 19th-century tree calf, flat spine gilt (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Pierre Siron (contemporary inscriptions) -- A.H. Bright (1912 bookplate).
With the exception of the anatomical man, the cuts belong to Kerver’s first “small” set. They derive from the Pigouchet-Vostre set 2, with the exception of the job on his dungheap, which appears to be an original treatment, depicting death murdering a man with Job and his friends oblivious in the background. RARE. Only 8 other copies are recorded in ISTC; not in the British Library, Bavarian State Library or Bibliothèque nationale. R 1542; Bohatta Livres d'heures 593; Brunet V, 1617, Heures gothiques 166; Pollard, Morgan 581; Goff H-402.
