Small 8° (155 x 94 mm). Plantin device on title, 135 wood-engravings in text. (Title washed and with some residual soiling, a few ink marks and other small stains.) Red morocco gilt by Roger de Coverly, triple fillets round sides, panelled spine, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (ex libris; bibliographical notes pencilled at front).
FIRST PLANTIN EDITION. An abbreviation of the famous history of Scandinavia which first appeared at Rome in 1555 and enjoyed a resounding success. Plantin's patron, Corneille Grapheus, brought a copy to Belgium and undertook the abbreviation himself. The 135 cuts, reductions by Arnold Nicolai from the Rome folio edition, represent all aspects of social life, among which are skiing and whaling. Adams M-143; Brunet III, 1302; Sorgeloos 343.
