8° (169 x 111mm). Title within arabesque woodcut border, 178 woodcuts attributed to Bernard Salomon, each within an ornamental border, woodcut head-pieace and initial. (Lacking final blank, possibly blank, tiny repair on margin of title, lightly soiled.) 19th-century blue morocco by Duru, gilt spine, turn-ins and edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (booklabel).
Second French edition. The first edition in French was published in Lyon in 1557 and then reprinted in 1564 and 1583. Bernard Salomon is closely associated with the renaissance of French book illustration and was the designer of Jean de Tournes of Lyon. In some copies the final leaf had a printer's device.
