PERRAULT, Charles (1628-1703). Histoires ou Contes du tems passé … nouvelle edition. Amsterdam: Jaques Desbordes, 1742.
12 ° (140 x 72mm). Engraved frontispiece , title in red and black, woodcut vignette on title repeated on final verso, 8 engraved head-pieces. (Some spotting and browning.) Green morocco by Ramage, covers with gilt fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, the same tool repeated on spine, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: Isabella Montagu (signature on title; identified in a pencil note as the daughter of John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu, who married William Montagu, second Duke of Manchester, 16 April 1723).
A rare piracy of the La Haye [Paris, Coustellier] edition of the same year. In common with this and with the edition of 1721, it is illustrated with the frontispiece and headpieces of the first edition of 1697. It adds ‘L’adroite princesse’, a final story by Perrault’s niece, Marie Jeanne L’Heritier de Villandon, at the end. Brunet IV, 508 (La Haye edition); Gumuchian 4411 (‘rarissime édition’); Osborne p. 609.
