Provenance: Charles Butler (Warren Wood, Hatfield, book label) -- A.H. Bright (bookplate dated 1912).

The third edition of this chivalric poem celebrating the heroic deeds of Emperor Maximilian. The first edition published in 1517 is ONE OF THE FINEST ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE GERMAN RENAISSANCE. The emperor is represented in the poem as Theuerdank, portrayed overcoming the difficulties of his journey to win his bride, Mary of Burgundy (Kunigin Ernreich in the poem). Maximilian himself was closely involved in all aspects of Tewrdanck, from its composition to its distribution after printing. This edition reuses the woodcuts originally commissioned from some of the greatest woodcut artists of the period, including Beck, Schufelein, and Burgkmair. Brunet V, 768.
