8° (153 x 92mm). Title within woodcut border, 99 woodcut portraits by [?]Jobin after Tobias Stimmer, all text pages within narrow woodcut borders of varying design. Finely bound in polished calf gilt by Francis Bedford, gilt edges. Provenance: Henry Huth (book label) -- A.H. Bright (1912 bookplate).

FIRST LATIN EDITION of this striking series of woodcut portraits, including Albertus Magnus, Hutten, Savonarola, Erasmus (after Holbein?), Helius, Copernicus, Luther, Vesalius, Calvin, Gesner, Melanchthon, Fuchsius, Sambucus, and Orlandus Lassus the musician. The preface names Tobias Stimmer (1539-1584) as the designer of the blocks which were probably cut by Jobin as publisher of the book. The text consists of an epitome of the life of each subject in the form of an epitaph, followed by Latin and Greek verses by Reusner and other authors.
