8° (155 x 98 mm). 13 full-page and 2 half-page woodcuts of exotic plants depicting the plants discovered on Drake's voyage including a woodcut of cocoa beans, woodcut device on title, one (of 2) final blanks present. (Side-notes to B6v just touched by the binder, small light stain to A2-4.) 20th-century green morocco gilt, by Birdsall, gilt edges. Provenance:?German ownership inscription on title dated 1630 – Juan Maria Wanklei (ink ownership inscription on title dated 1655) -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION FULLY DESCRIBING THE NEW WORLD BOTANY DISCOVERED ON DRAKE'S VOYAGE. Clusius’ descriptions are derived from Lawrence Eliot, the naturalist on Drake's circumnavigation of 1577-1580. RARE - only nine copies have sold at auction in 40 years (ABPC/AE-online), often bound with other titles Adams C-2240.
