Small 8° (144 x 93mm). Woodcut Plantin device on title, plans in text. (Possibly lacking C8?, T8?*, ends on v5, 4 with large repaired tear, ¶3 with minor marginal chip, variable light browning and spotting.) Early 20th-century blue crushed morocco, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: early indistinct ink ownership inscription on title – occasional marginalia and underlining in an early hand) -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

‘Francisco Alvarez was the almoner of King Manuel I of Portugal and a member of the Portuguese embassy which landed in Ethiopia in 1520. Alvarez lived there until 1527 and returned to Portugal. His relation was the first good description of that country ... [and] had a great influence because it destroyed an old myth: the legend of Prester John’ (Sorgeloos).
