MACKENZIE, Sir George Steuart (1780-1848). Travels in the Island of Iceland. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Company [and others], 1811.
4° (274 x 215mm). Half-title. Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 7 plates on india-paper and mounted, 6 plain plates of which one folding, one plate of music, 2 maps, one folding and with partial colour, 15 wood-engravings in the text, 4 folding letterpress tables. (Tiny hole to fly-title A1 affecting word ‘of’ which is stuck to verso, large tear to K2 but without loss, occasional light spotting, browning and offsetting mainly affecting folding plates.) Contemporary half calf, over marbled-paper covered boards marbled endpapers (rebacked with gilt morocco spine and corners faded, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: H.A. Bright (gilt crest on spine).
WIDE-MARGINED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Mackenzie, chemist, geologist, and antiquary, was taught chemistry by Joseph Black and T. C. Hope who steered him towards a Huttonian view of geology as espoused in James Hutton's Theory of the Earth (1795). Mackenzie travelled to Iceland in 1810 with the physicians Henry Holland and Richard Bright, the latter being the uncle of Henry A. Bright. An a.l.s by Mackenzie, dated Edinburgh, 13th September 1810, is tipped in at the beginning of the present work, in which he appears to write of Bright as his ‘affable companion’ and regretting that he will not be staying in Edinburgh (Bright, on completion of the voyage, moved to Guy’s).
