WIDE-MARGINED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Mackenzie, chemist, geologist, and antiquary, was taught chemistry by Joseph Black and T. C. Hope who steered him towards a Huttonian view of geology as espoused in James Hutton's Theory of the Earth (1795). Mackenzie travelled to Iceland in 1810 with the physicians Henry Holland and Richard Bright, the latter being the uncle of Henry A. Bright. An a.l.s by Mackenzie, dated Edinburgh, 13th September 1810, is tipped in at the beginning of the present work, in which he appears to write of Bright as his ‘affable companion’ and regretting that he will not be staying in Edinburgh (Bright, on completion of the voyage, moved to Guy’s). Tooley 314.
